2017 – a year in review

Another year over, the second full year of this blog, and it’s been an encouraging 12 months. The most important new addition was the first ever Groundhoppers book, exploring the 2016-17 season in the Northern League and still available for download to your Kindle device for a mere £2.49 at Amazon.

Views and visitors are up on 2016, despite a serious lull in posting from October onwards due to family commitments. A new photo feature – ‘In Focus’ – has been successful, and helped find a home for some photos that I liked but never managed to fit into a proper blog.

To wrap up a brief summary of the year, here are a few highlights.

Starting point: Blyth Spartans vs Workington on New Year’s Day (see pic above)

Billingham Town forward Craig Hutchinson.

Most popular post: Billingham Town vs Cleethorpes Town in the FA Vase

Horden’s Peter Crawford slots home the opening goal in a friendly against Felling Magpies.

Happiest story: the return of Saturday football to Horden

The clubhouse and dressing rooms at Druid Park.

Least expected visit: football back at the Wheatsheaf, following West Allotment Celtic’s move to Newcastle Blue Star’s old home.

Favourite new ground: it has to be the incredible sloping, high-altitude pitch at Wearhead United

Gateshead International Stadium.

Finishing point: Gateshead vs Hartlepool Utd on Boxing Day.
